Vitamin C

       SKINCYCLOPEDIA

Vitamin C happens to be the buzz word of the skincare and cosmeceutical world at the moment. It is the current love of everyone who knows a thing or two about good skin. and rightly so because this is the wonder vitamin which works visibly on dull skin, pigmentation, acne scars and fine wrinkles along with an added benefit of helping your skin to deal with ongoing photo damage.

But before we embark upon the hows and whys of vitamin C lets just have a look at what exactly skin brightening is and who needs it the most?

Dull skin might be caused by many things; lack of hydration (dehydrated & parched skin), scarring due to acne episodes or inflammation, pigmentation and but of course tanned/sun damaged skin. All of these skin issues need brightening but we don’t have a one size fits all approach as the causes & expressions vary severely and so does the therapy needed to redress. So before jumping on to the vitamin C bandwagon, make sure your hydration and sun protection game is 10/10 so that your skin is able to derive the benefits of vitamin C in it's best possible way.

HOW DOES VITAMIN C WORK?

Woman walking in sunlight and pollutionBe it UV rays, pollution or a poor diet; they all damage skin by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) which results in oxidative stress which further causes collagen breakdown and melanin build up at the dermal level of skin, leading to visible wrinkles and pigmentation respectively.

a) Topical Vitamin C applied on skin primarily acts as a local antioxidant that helps to combat the oxidative stress and damage to the skin.

b) Vitamin C helps the enzymes producing and stabilising collagen to work optimally, hence preventing the formation of new wrinkles.

c) It counteracts on pigmentation due to acne or any other reason by decreasing melanin formation in the skin by virtue of partially blocking melanin synthesizing enzyme aka Tyrosinase.

d) It has an anti-inflammatory action which leads to better skin healing.

ISN’T IT A GOOD IDEA TO APPLY NATURALLY OCCURRING VITAMIN C ON MY SKIN?

NO, because Vitamin C (chemically L- Ascorbic Acid) is neither stable & nor absorbed in its native form, so it needs to be formulated in various formulations like

a) Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP): most stable, easily absorbed form,

b) Ascorbyl 6 palmitate,

c) Disodium isostearyl 2-0 L ascorbyl phosphate,

d) Tetraisopalmitoyl ascorbic acid &

e) Sodium ascorbate

IS THE EFFECT DEPENDENT ON THE CONCENTRATION? WHY ARE SOME SERUMS SO EXPENSIVE?

The concentration of vExpensive-Serumsitamin C makes a lot of difference, anything less than 10% vitamin C is not sufficient. It is also advisable to use products with added antioxidants like Vitamin E & Ferulic acid as these two have been shown to boost the efficiency of Vitamin C by manifold. Maintaining stability in the formula needs a robust technology which increases the cost sometimes.

HOW DO I KNOW MY VITAMIN C SERUM IS STILL EFFECTIVE?

Another important point to know is that the active form of Vitamin C is colorless and stable only at pH below 3.5 (acidic pH ensures good penetration through the top layers of skin).

Vitamin C turns into yellow inactive form on exposure to light and air, so it’s a good idea to check if your vitamin C comes packed in dark colored/opaque bottles and has an airless pump or packaging. Also, discard your Vitamin C serum if the color changes to yellow or if the bottle has been opened for more than 30 days.

TELL US ABOUT SIDE EFFECTS IF ANY.

Side-effects-of-Vitamin-CThe side effects are mild like yellow discoloration of skin, stinging or tingling sensations and breakouts in acne prone skin. Stop the use immediately if breakouts start appearing as it may flare up acne in few people. Other side effects are however transient and resolve on continued use. Vitamin C can be used once daily ideally, either morning or evening.

OKAY, I AM CONVINCED, I NEED VITAMIN C!

Wait before you naively follow the influencers or may be your best friend and grab the vitamin C serum on the shopping aisle. Most of vitamin C serums are oil-based and work great for dry & sensitive skins but cause breakouts on oily skin, who would ideally need a gel/ light serum based preparation. Make sure you do read the product label before discovering your new skin brightening trustee.
