Graduating

  from basics

Your makeup routine is probably like a well-honed habit you don’t have to think too much about. That it’s worked for you so far, is no reason to assume it’ll keep working for you as your skin and facial features change in step with time. We’re usually hyper-conscious about this with our skincare regimens—even those of us who prefer minimal fuss will have overhauled and upgraded our routines when we crossed the 30-mark. Your makeup routine deserves the same attention.

Sunscreen

Sun protection

Anti-aging starts with sunscreen and by now, applying sunscreen (Avene Very High Protection SPF 50+ Emulsion) daily should be a reflex action. The last step in your skincare routine, give it five minutes or more to settle in before applying your makeup. As the skin gets more sensitive to sun damage, and a little less effective against free radicals, boost its SPF arsenal by layering sun protection.

Base

Base makeup can settle into fine lines, making them more obvious. To work around this problem, choose a moisturizer like L'Oreal Paris Revitalift Magic Blur Day Cream, which has blurring polymers that diffuse light to create the illusion of smoother skin. You may also apply a facial moisturizer with SPF (Olay Total Effects 7 IN 1 Anti Ageing Skin Cream (Moisturizer) Normal SPF) and follow with a primer that contains UVA/UVB protection (IsaDora’s Protect Face Primer). Finish with a foundation and/or pressed powder that provides additional sun protection (Colorbar Skin Perfect SPF 60 Foundation).

Next, layer a primer like Colorbar Perfect Match to create a smooth canvas for your foundation.

Colour Correct

corrector palette

A little lesson in color theory—colours on the opposite ends of the color wheel neutralize each other. That’s where correctors come in—to neutralize the underlying discoloration so that the base makeup layered on top has a chance to do its thing. If you have blue/purple-tinged dark circles, yellow & peach to orange correctors is the answer. When your skin’s angry and red, a touch of green (IsaDora ID CC Concealer 30 Anti Redness) will make it look peaceful again. If you see sallow yellowness, counter & brighten with a lavender corrector (IsaDora ID CC Concealer 34 Anti- Dullness).

Brighten

If you’re still searching for that elusive glow, there are a few key products that’ll help increase your epidermal wattage. The key word here is ‘Illuminators’. If you find a foundation with an in-built illuminator like the BeYu Light Reflecting Foundation, you’ll be one step closer to looking healthy and radiant. If you’d like to stay loyal to your current favorite foundation, mix in a drop of L'Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator to cheat that lit-from-within glow.

Textures

pressed powder

If you want true longevity in your makeup, once again the secret is layering. Closest to your bare skin should be liquid, build on the liquid layer with cream and finally lock everything in place with powder.

This sequence works across product categories—set liquid foundation with a powder compact (Faces Canada Ultime Pro HD Finishing Touch Setting Powder), intensify cream blush with Faces Canada Glam On Perfect Blush or help a creamy eyeshadow stay put by adding a powder shadow on top.

Setting

Setting spray

If you really want to get the most out of setting sprays, make them multitask. Spray it on your brush or blender before applying foundation to make the formula feel lighter on your skin and stay on longer. Use it on your eyeshadow or highlighter brush to make your shadow & highlighter pigments pop. Or, if your brows are behaving badly, discipline them with a brow powder and setting spray. Works like a charm.
