Beauty Of

Oils, masks, serums, creams, and double cleansing. This is the maximal era especially when it comes to skincare. But while the new formulations may be better, you don’t have to use all of them at once. Skin sensitivity is on the rise, and sometimes it is caused by over zealous skin routines. Personally, I was all for the 9-step method until a year back. I was double cleansing, wearing two serums, oils and daily masks. But now that I’m sticking to the basics, my skin looks better than ever.

Don’t Rush into a Fad

Beauty of Simplicity Editorial Insert (1)Industry experts come up with a new ‘essential’ every year. However, this doesn’t replace all the other basic but just adds on to them. It’s enough to confuse the most seasoned beautista. Add to that the bottles of half-used products that never finish because we want to try that new magic complexion saver. One of the side effects of over using and changing cosmetics is increased dryness and sensitivity. Before our skin gets used to something, we change the product.

Prioritize Your Needs

beauty of simplicity editorial insert 2So, how does one pare down a beauty routine? I think, to begin with, it is important to make a note of just one or two skin concerns and then work towards resolving them. If it is oiliness and open pores for you then look for a mild chemical peel to clear pores at night and a water-based moisturizer for the day. If pigmentation and dullness is your concern then use a Vitamin C serum in the day and a night cream with a de-pigmentor such as Kojic acid. If you want to improve wrinkles and elasticity then pat on an antioxidant serum in the day and a retinol cream to stimulate collagen at night. Just remember that moisturizer and sunscreen is your staple. And do give any product at least 4-6 weeks to work before you decide its efficacy.

The same principles can be applied to hair as well. What is your number one hair concern? Choose a shampoo and conditioner according to that. I feel that most of us own too many styling products which we never end up using. Personally, I feel you can get away with a styling cream or anti frizz serum and a volumising mousse or spray when you want to add a touch of glamour to your style. Everything over and above this list is quite frankly optional.

But Don’t Stop Exploring

beauty of simplicity editorial insert 3Don’t be a product junkie but neither must you hold yourself back from exploring newer formulas hitting the stores. Every time you want to try a new serum, cream or makeup product, remember to drop something else from your regime that no longer serves the purpose. Your beauty regime must depend upon your need and time available to you. Always find those 5 mins of morning and evening to invest in your beauty goals. Always ask for sample before buying as most of the premium brands carry samples for consumer trials with their retailers.
